What is the added value of a certificate for you?09 July 2019
As a grower or a customer, you are confronted more and more often with the demand for a sustainability certificate. As a supplier, it often becomes a ‘license to deliver’ for your customers, and as a customer, it is a ‘license to sell’ for your (end) customers.
In this article a grower, a customer and Royal FloraHolland discuss the value of certification.
Contributing to a sustainable and green living environment
KP Holland has various certificates, such as MPS Socially Qualified and MPS-GAP. This means that the company produces in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Leo de Vries, Manager Marketing & Sales at KP Holland, says "We have the intention to work sustainably. We do not need a certificate for that, but it does allow us to demonstrate how sustainable we are." Leo finds that more and more customers are demanding certificates. "The demand for sustainable products is increasing due to pressure from society. You need a certificate if you want to succeed. And you want to give the consumer the assurance that you operate sustainably in all areas. That is how you distinguish yourself."
Inspire people to produce sustainably
Susanne van der Mark is the Corporate Social Responsibility Officer at FleuraMetz. She says: "Customers are increasingly asking for sustainable products. That is because consumers also ask for them more frequently. Sustainability offers florists an opportunity to distinguish themselves. In my ideal world, certification wouldn't even be necessary and sustainable production would be a basic principle. That's probably not going to happen, so certification is now a 'license to sell'." According to Susanne, positivity is the key word. "You can state repeatedly that the world is being destroyed, but that won't incite people to act. Set good examples and inspire people to produce and buy sustainably."
Making the marketplace and production more sustainable with members
It is essential for Royal FloraHolland to realize and maintain sustainable production and a sustainable marketplace. Stefanie Miltenburg is the Sustainability Program Manager at Royal FloraHolland and gives concrete examples of the activities the company and its members currently want to prioritize.
"We are urging members to start working with digital environmental registration and certification. And we want to reduce single-use packaging. We do this together with the Sustainability Leading Team (which consists of members) and through member consultations." FSI is the leading initiative within the international floriculture industry with regard to sustainability. "As an FSI accelerator, we are working together to set the standard for sustainable production and trade. This is now mainly linked to an FSI-recognized certificate. That is why we are encouraging our members to go along with the market demands. "For Dutch growers, an MPS-GAP or Global G.A.P. certificate is currently the best choice. It is a misconception that members must be members of FSI in order to be certified."
Royal FloraHolland is currently working on making certificates more visible in Floriday and thus in the sales channels. This offers growers an opportunity to market themselves and distinguish themselves. It also allows customers to buy more efficiently.
